Soft capsules, also known as softgels, come in round, oval, fish, and tube shapes, among others. They are a dosage form in which oils, or non-aqueous liquids and suspensions that do not dissolve gelatin, are sealed inside a capsule shell.

Soft capsules are made by directly encapsulating a measured amount of liquid medicine, or by dissolving or dispersing a solid medicine in a suitable excipient to form a solution, suspension, emulsion, or semi-solid, which is then sealed in a spherical or oval soft shell. The thick gelatin film forms a completely airtight seal, with high capsule strength and barrier performance, keeping the contents stable over long periods. Tests show that gelatin film provides an oxygen barrier more than 30 times that of polyethylene film. It is highly stable against atmospheric oxygen, protecting contents from oxidation and moisture absorption.
